September 1st...the first day of spring...and look what I saw...a new born lamb only 30 mins old. A lady I have been looking after in hospital arranged for me to go out to her parents farm on the way out to Bluff to see if we could see any lambs being born. This was the closest we got...triplets! Still with a bit of goo hanging off them!

Gosh! It's been like forever since I last blogged. Not too much has been happening though I've some exciting news...i delivered my first NZ baby on tuesday night...the independant midwife didn't quite make it as the lady laboured quickly and so I did the delivery...yey, to back at it!
I'm off to Hanmer Spring this weekend for a fun time of skiing and holidaying...will let you know how it goes and will post some more pictures soon.

Today was my three month anniversary...can you believe it! I can't! So to mark the occassion and celebrate my birthday from the other day, I took a road trip to Queenstown and spent the afternoon there...it was great...my favourite place at the moment is the snow capped mountains.

This is an update for the earlier posted earthquake. Note the change in magnitude. This earthquake was widely felt in the South Island and as far north as Taranaki.

The quake was 6.6 on the richter scale and came from fiordland. We are still getting aftershocks here and it's about 40 minutes ago since I first felt it.
WE JUST HAD AN EARTHQUAKE! That was scary. It's 2132 here and at 2127 the earth started to shake and the house felt like it had a pulse running through it like a wave. It wasn't violent but it definately had the place shaking I have never experienced that before! It was a little surreal seeing the blinds swaying and the candlesticks on the fireplace moving back and forward. It lasted about two minutes. The strangest two minutes I've had in a long time. Oh, here it comes again!

This unfortunately was my first stack.
down I came. Oh, well. I was better then next attempt :) I promise!

The other first was being in a photo shoot this morning. Long story short but a professional photographer wanted to shoot some lifestyle shots in Queenstown and because we were in Queenstown for the weekend, we were able to coordinate our times. It was a contact of Christie's and he wanted to photograph us jogging in the misty morning. We didn't really know what we really needed to be doing but the photographer seemed happy and wants to photograph us if we are ever back in town. So watch out for me in a magazine somewhere or on a billboard in a city near you! I'll show you a sneak peak when we get a copy of them (if any of them turned out alright!)

Hey everyone. Thanks to my brother in law Chris, I have been able to load more photos onto my blog for you to see. I've posted them through Flickr and if you double click on the photo box on the left hand side of my page it will take you to my flickr account and you'll be able to see some of them and as a slideshow too! Wow! I haven't got time to load recent ones onto the site just now but will do in the next couple of days so finally you'll be brought up to date with them. Enjoy! Thanks Chris!

Sorry for the gap in postings...have just finished a run of five night duties...glad that's over.
So, I've added cycling to my exercise regime. There is a great bike path behind where I'm living which goes out along some flood banks and swings you out the back of Invers to the estuary. It's a great route. I feel like I'm in training for the Tour De France...:) ...no, not really but yes, it's nearly that time of year again!!! I'm a wee bit excited! Bring on July!
Anyway, I went for a bike ride this afternoon and was just about home when I looked up and saw that an lady was walking her dog along the path ahead. She looked up and saw me and moved to the side of the path. But her dog didn't really move over her side so I thought I'll slow down and go through the middle...which is what I proceeded to do.
So, what went wrong...just as I was going through the middle, the dog decided to change and go the side of it's owner and I ran into the dog. It yelped and I fell off my bike ontop of the dog! Couldn't believe it! Fortunately the dog wasn't injured...that would have been just bad. The lady apologised and said that the dog was a bit blind. Great! I was a little embarrassed but after figuring we were all ok I just got back on my bike and cycled home..albeit with a bruise or two more than what I had before the cycle.

This would have to be one of the most beautiful places in the world...Milford Sound. Just majestic.

Check this out....the posties here ride bikes!! Have never seen one here that rides a motorbike. That's intense! I have been wanting to take a picture of one ever since I first saw them. The photo is a little far away but I wasn't game to get any closer...didn't want to look suspicious. I'd been waiting this morning for her to come around and when she did, I bolted out to take the photo only to realise that the neighbour had come out too to collect his mail that had just been delivered...ahhh! Hope he didn't see me!

So, last night was the long awaited house warming party. It was a good night on the whole and I think that most people had a good time. We over catered but that usually happens so there is chocolate cake and pavlova and cheesecake clogging up our fridge in preparation for clogging us up too! Ah, good food though!
We thought it might be fun to play a few games so I tried to teach the group how to play four on a couch which kinda worked. It was girls against guys and the girls won two out of two rounds and then that was it...the guys lost interest. Think it was too much of a strategy game for them.
Not everyone came as expected but we had about 20 people turn up so the house was full which made christie pleased...after all, it is her house. Sorry, I didn't get out the camera in the end; didn't ever really seem the time to take a few snap shots. Nothing to exciting sorry but it was a good night.

A funny story for the midwives amongst us...This week I've been orientating to Antenatal clinic and today I flew solo. My first customer was a lady who spoke no English and I was told that she was coming with an interpreter...which was indeed what happened. However, I soon discovered that the interpreter's English wasn't much better.
I asked the pregnant lady if she had brought with her a wee sample so that I could test it...no she hadn't (I realised this by seeing she didn't have one with her rather than her saying no to that question). So I asked her if she could go and do one in a little jar for me in the bathroom next door. I got the interpreter to explain to her that I wanted her to wee into the jar. Off the lady went.
She was taking forever in the bathroom and I began to wonder what was holding her up. A little while later the lady emerged and handed me the jar...inside was a poo sample!! Somewhere the translation obviously got confused! And no wonder she took so long! That's pretty talented to produce a poo sample on demand!
I tried to explain to both the interpreter and the lady that I actually wanted a wee sample to which the interpreter said "soft?" "NO, no." I replied, "a wee. Urine. Yellow liquid!" I'm not sure if she really understood me in the end even though she was shaking her head in agreement.
The doctor waiting to then see this lady was hovering around outside the room and told me to hurry up with my consultation. My explanation to him and the other midwives as to why the consult was taking so long caused quite a few laughs...what a way to start off my clinic list for the day.
P.S. My flatmate just made a suggestion as to why the word "wee" wasn't understood...everyone here uses the word "wee" for small rather than urine! Gosh, why didn't I think of that at the time!
The latest addition to the family....meet my new car (yet to be named, if ever). A nissan Bluebird.
The frost thick on the ground this morning...kinda beautiful though! It was still O degrees Celcius at 9am...and they tell me this is nothing compared to what is yet to come...brrrr!

Stewart Island...Fri 15 - Sun 17 May.
A 1 hour ferry ride south from Bluff takes you to the third island of NZ...a national park wonderland. The weather unfortunately wasn't great but it was still very beautiful. There was a rainbow nearly every day...a reminder to me that God keeps His promises.
On sunday 7th May, Christie, Kimmy (a friend of Christie's) and I went for a walk up a very high mountain...I didn't realise that Mt Luxmore was as high or as long as it is but we climbed to Luxmore hut at 1000m. By tree line, it was well and truely snowing...these are some of the pictures from the top! It was hard work...I couldn't lift my legs for a couple of days after but so amazing!

After the trek through the blizzard from Luxmore hut back to tree line....brrrr cold!
Welcome to the home of Esther Duncan. I've been in NZ for three weeks now and have finally got around to setting up a blog to keep you up to date on what I've been up to. Hope you enjoy seeing some pictures and hearing some stories.
